Sons of the Republic of Texas

Ephraim M. Daggett Chapter #36

Minutes for the Meeting of October 3, 2009

Our illustrious President David Wells called the meeting to order and all were welcomed.  The invocation was offered by the Chaplain, Virgil Ellis, in fine fashion.  The pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to The Flag of Texas was led by our Vice President, Jerry Spencer.

The Ancestral Roll Call was, once again, very entertaining with some of the key points pertaining to frontier cabins.  One story of a wedding, where the bride hid under the house and dragged out for the ceremony, was followed by a story of the house that couldnÕt seem to be dragged out for the public to view.  Republic of Texas currency also appeared, $5 bills with the picture of Deaf Smith, enough for all to have one, and a $50 of David Wells that he was given by his grandmother, but was disappointed that Sam Houston did not sign.  Fortunately he did not burn it in anger.  Red River and Robertson colonies had several ancestor occupants.

Membership Chairman, Russell Leavens, announced the two newest members, Ross Michael West and his brother, Spencer Ryan West.  We welcome them and hope that they come to enjoy the camaraderie and the $7.00 breakfast (for which our treasurer, Don Goodman, reminds us), which is delicious.

The minutes of August 1, 2009 were approved as posted in advance online at our website for all to review.

Treasurer Donald Goodman presented his report and offered coffee cups for sale to all.

Our President Wells presented our speaker for the day with flair and style, only slightly out-styled by our President General L. Vaughn Oliver, UTA graduate, Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver and Philmont Volunteer, to name but a few accolades.  President General Oliver was asked to speak to the state of the office and he replied ÒHuh?Ó and began the explanation.

As the first President General from our chapter, Vaughn explained that there are two others nearby, Byron Woodward (Õ50-Õ51) buried in Arlington and Gordon Wylie (Õ72-Õ73) buried in White Settlement.  Having served at all levels of the SRT, P.G. Vaughn proceeded to give us a very comprehensive review of the office that he has occupied since the spring of 2008.

A few of his accomplishments include the development of the Eagle Scout Certificates, Website development, archives of all SRT applications on file onto CDÕs available for purchase, updates of the certificates for Members, The Distinguished Service Award and the Knights of San Jacinto with a replica of the letter that Sam Houston wrote to establish the order.

An explanation of the recently established foundation that is protecting the assets of the SRT and all of the duties of the P.G. followed.  Presiding over meetings, calling meetings, appointing chairs, countersigning checks, representing the SRT at functions duties, administrative affairs and budget issues summarize the duties.  The informative talk was followed by the presentation of a book of Texas characters, a flag flown over the Texas Capital on September 22, 2009 and of course an official SRT logo coffee cup to President General Vaughn for his sharing.  The flag was provided through the friend of Fort Worth Chapter Member D. A. Sharpe, his Texas Legislative Representative, Mr. Phil King of Weatherford, P.G. OliverÕs town of residence.

TheyÕre being no Old Business; we proceeded to New Business involving emails.  All members are to be sure that theirs is current with the SRT and Janice. There is still a need to help the chapter in Granbury and President Wells will let us know of their next meeting.  There is a new application, Robert T. (Tom) Evans, Kansas City, Mo. that is in process.  A rededication of the marker for Lorenzo de Zavala on October 6th at an elementary school was announced.

The last bit of New Business was the Nominating Committee as appointed by the president composed of Duane Blair, Ben Milam, John Williams and Russell Leavens.

There being no further business, the Chaplain Virgil Ellis, dressed as General Tarrant, helped us close the chapter meeting with a prayer.  We will meet again December 5, 2009, at which time we expect to elect chapter officers for 2010.

Respectfully submitted,
