EPHRAIM DAGGETT CHAPTER 36
Sons of the Republic of Texas
Minutes of 12 April 2008 meeting

The meeting was called to
order by President Duane Blair at 10:00 am and the invocation was offered by
Russell Leavens. The pledge of allegiance to the American and Texas Flags was
led by President Blair. Mr. Blair asked that those in attendance stand and
introduce themselves and give a review of their ancestry making them eligible
for membership in SRT.
Jerry Spencer read the
minutes from the two prior meetings and a motion and second to approve the
minutes, as read, was followed by a unanimous vote for approval by voice vote.
Don Goodman reported that the bank balance at 1 February 2008 was $2,813.54 and
the balance at 12 April 2008 was $2,806.90 which revealed a squandering of
$6.64 over the last two months. Don asked for guidance related to retention of
financial records of the club since his files were taking up a lot of room. The
decision was to keep only the five previous years of records.
Vaughn Oliver related
information about a Òlending libraryÓ of SRT wherein books would be passed from
member to member as they are read and Vaughn had a copy of ÒAlmonteÕs TexasÓ
which he had received from David Hanover of the Piney Woods Chapter on April 5,
2008 and Vaughn passed it to Jerry Spencer on 12 April 2008. There is no time
limit for the exchange to be made.
President Blair announced
that there are four new members in our club, Fred Patterson, Jr. of Denton
Texas, Robert Franklin Pitts of Grand Prairie, Jackie Lee Pitts of Mabank Texas
and Bruce Harley Daniel of Harrisburg North Carolina.
Virgil Ellis called on D.A.
Sharpe to introduce Robert A.E. Callanan, Admiral in the Texas Navy, who
presented the program which was a review of the functions and organization of the
Texas Navy along with some historical information related to that organization.
Virgil Ellis presented the speaker with an honorarium in appreciation for his
service.
Virgil announced that the
program for the June meeting would be about the Star Spangled Banner presented
by Willard Thomas and the program for August would be about the Texas Legation
and for October the program would be about the Final Battle of Palo Duro
Canyon.
President Blair reported that
the SRT had asked each chapter to make an effort to get April 21st
designated as San Jacinto Day in their local area. He had sent a letter and a
sample proclamation to Mayor Mike Moncrief of Fort Worth and Duane received a
telephone call response, from Mr. Brian Chapman, saying that city policy dictated
that such actions would only take place on Òsignificant datesÓ and the next
Òsignificant dateÓ would be on the 175th anniversary of the battle
at San Jacinto which would be three years from now. This means that we would
have to apply again in the year 2011 to ask for a San Jacinto Day proclaimed by
the City of Fort Worth. President Blair stated that a file of these records
would be kept and passed on to future officers of this club for their action in
this regard.
Russell Leavens offered the
benediction and President Blair adjourned the meeting at 11:40 am.
