EPHRAIM DAGGETT CHAPTER NO. 36

Sons of the Republic of Texas

Minutes of 2 February 2008 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Blair at 10:00 A.M. and the invocation was offered by Russell Leavens. The pledge of Allegiance, to the American and Texas Flags, was led by David Wells and President Blair then asked for those in attendance to introduce themselves and give a review of their ancestry making them eligible for membership in SRT.

Reading of the minutes of the December 2007 meeting was deferred until the April meeting. The TreasurerÕs report provided by Donald Goodman was read by Jerry Spencer and a motion by Virgil Ellis to approve the report was seconded by David Wells and the report was approved by voice vote.

President Blair reported that D.A. Sharpe had undergone open-heart surgery and was at home recuperating and was doing well. President Blair announced that the April meeting would be moved from the first Saturday to the 12th day of the month because of the conflict with the Annual meeting in Nacogdoches where Vaughn Oliver will be installed as President General of the Sons of the Republic of Texas.

Program Chairman, Virgil Ellis, introduced Jack Edmondson who made a presentation regarding details of the battle for Texas independence at the Alamo. He described the physical layout of the compound and the arrangement of the defenses and defenders located in and around the Church. It was his opinion that the men who died there were expecting reinforcements and would not have intended to die in a sacrificial manner. It was his opinion that the reason for defending that position was because the cannons located there were too important to have them fall into the hands of Santa AnnaÕs Army. Mr. Edmondson said that the exact number of men who died there was speculative and that the number of casualties suffered by the Mexican Army was also undetermined but he believed that the number of Mexican soldiers taking part in the siege was approximately 2500 and the balance of Mexican forces was still some distance away.  Virgil Ellis presented Mr. Edmondson with an honorarium for his service.

Virgil announced that the program for the April meeting would be about the Texas Navy and in June, Willard Thomas would talk about the Star Spangled Banner.

Vaughn Oliver announced that there would be a reception to honor Mr. Baker on February 9th at the Central Christian Church in Weatherford from 2 to 4 pm. Vaughn also announced a genealogy workshop to be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Arlington from 9 am to 4 pm on March 27.  The cost to attend is $40.00, which includes a meal.

Mr. Oliver provided an up-date on the production of the DVDÕs holding the information contained in all the membership applications of SRT Members. He hopes that they will be ready for distribution by the April meeting but the cost has been increased from $100.00 to $200.00 per set and the number of DVDÕs per set has increased from 32 to 140.

Russell Leavens offered the closing prayer and President Blair dismissed the meeting at 11:40 A.M.
